A few more notes on this problem

Postby Chris » Wed Oct 01, 2003 8:44 am

Testing on R4 beta 0.04

It happens at all video modes (Tested 320x240, 800x600, 1024x768)

It does not happen in windowed mode regardless of v-synch. It happily runs at up to 199fps windowed.

I tested with v-synch on, 800x600, Refresh rate jacked up to 140Hz, Fullscreen.
No problem!, fps maxed out at 123fps - even on the easy scenes. Why is this not 140? In windowed with a higher resolution(window size = 1020x740) up to 180fps is achieved.

I confirmed refresh rate was 140 - checked it with the Monitor OSD.

tested v-synch off, 800x600, 140Hz Fullscreen - Problem again and fps shows 199

I guess it runs lower because it won't render a frame that is less than 1/200th of a sec away from the last one. So... say it was 1/201th of a second, it skips that frame. I think thats probably why you're not getting the top refresh rate - Windows seems quite uneven about how it calls rendering - i've had to smooth all the times to make it run so its not jerky - its a bit of a pain.

and yep - the limiting is done in compiled code i'm afraid.

ok this is bothering me. I get 60fps solid as a rock. Never more never less. I know it's a good thing but i wonder why i'm not getting above 60.

nevermind i fixed the problem well above 100 now.

I've taken off the framerate limiting now. Something now cuts in at 1000fps, so if you ever reach this scenes in R4 will actually go faster than usual.

I'm guessing this won't be an issue - it looks better running with vsync anyway
